The vineyard is the key factor

                                                                            A LAND OF VINEYARDS

Finca Loranque is surrounded by fertile, calcareous clay soil, which is perfect for farming, and especially vineyards. A unique landscape, described in many documents which prove that in the 11thcentury there were great vineyards planted with the best stocks. The most difficult part of the project was designing a vineyard that could guarantee the elaboration of quality wines. In order to achieve our goal, we decided the only person who could help us was Pablo Eguzkiza, from the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez: a company which truly promotes the most important terroirs in Spain.

After carrying out a conscientious study of the soil, rainfall, specific climate conditions…, and distributing the 500 hectares that make up the land on the Estate, the decision was made to plant 42 hectares with the variety of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot, which over the years have demonstrated they feel quite at home in the soil where they have been planted, producing grapes of a high concentration and quality. In this way, Finca Loranque has known how to recover the viticultural history of a land that assimilates the culture of wine as part of its physiognomy, giving back to this area the wine-producing fame it has always had, providing a personality to the wines which are receiving both national and international recognition.

OUR VINEYARDS DESERVE OUR BEST CARE

The work on the vineyard is continuous and is always carried out with absolute respect for the environment. Besides pruning the vines in winter, clearing the roads, ploughing…, we also prune the vines in summer, known as green pruning. Thanks to this work, which is done by hand in May, we are able to remove the excess ‘load’ from the plant, thus improving the yield and quality of the grapes, as more sunlight can reach the plant and we limit the number of clusters per vine. Another important task on the vineyard is topping, which consists in cutting off a portion of cane, generally the last three or four spurs. This serves to slow the growth of the vine and improve the effects of the sun on the leaves of the clusters.

However, the work that will possibly have the most influence on the final quality of the harvest is green harvesting, or the removal of immature grape clusters. During this stage, a great part of the clusters are removed in order to boost important aspects such as the concentration of anthocyanins and tannins, and the colour of the wines. The objective is to obtain quality, highly concentrated grapes, which is essential to elaborate the personal wines produced by Finca Loranque.
